The Ongoing Struggle for Women's Rights

Inside: Chiip O Neal in Z-Brand Spotlight

šŸ§˜ā€ā™€ļø Zen Note

Once again, it's Women's Month. But for many women, it's a reminder of the ongoing struggle for basic human rights. In countries where gender inequality is still rampant, women face countless violations of their bodies, dignity, and freedom. Within the past two weeks, women in Zambia have been arrested and detained for organizing a peaceful march against gender-based violence. And Iranian teenage girls were hunted by police for dancing in public. While South Korean women are exhausted from fighting the patriarchy.

It's a bleak reality that women globally are still fighting for the right to be heard, seen, and respected. In the remaining days of this month and onward, let's not just celebrate the progress we've made but also remember the work that still needs to be done. Let's support organizations that empower women and girls; listen to the voices of the women fighting for change; and continue to push for a world where every woman, regardless of her background or circumstances, can live with dignity and equality.

  • The Undiscovered Genius of the Niger Delta, an art event by Tiwani Contemporary Gallery, Lagos

Uncover and engage with this retelling of the Frenglish empire, in a twelve-piece series of paintings from the POV of estranged cosmography.

Tiwani Contemporary on Instagram: "In The Studio: Umar Rashid in Residency at @gasfoundation , at work for ā€˜The Undiscovered Genius of the Niger Delta. An Unexpected Journey Into Chaos Told From The Perspective of Someone That Was Not There, 1799ā€™, currently on view at Tiwani Contemporary Lagos until 15 April 2023ā . ā  Rashidā€™s deep engagement with how history is retold, shared and experienced has led him to become the cosmographer of his own fictional universe, chronicling the exploits of the Frenglish Empire around the globe in paintings, sculpture, moving-image and literature. In this new series of twelve works on canvas, Rashid questions what forms of agency, thought and self-determination could individuals have experienced during the 16-19th centuries, that could have shaped regional or world events for better or for worse? To what extent are black and brown subjects complicit in the formation of the world-shaping events that colonialism enacts? The title for the show, describes the artistā€™s estranged position and approach to understanding and building familiarity to the kinship groups, country and continent he descends from as a process of orientation in a country - Nigeria - heā€™d previously never physically been to. Rashid uses the lyrics and structure of the song '1999', by the late American musician Prince, to pace the trajectories of the seriesā€™ four protagonists, who in 1799 leave the land that would eventually become known as Nigeria 98 years later (in 1897). In this film, Rashid describes his intention with the painting, ā€˜I was dreaming when I wrote this. Forgive me if I go astrayā€™ (2023).
